A Foogo forgotten

In Wednesday's Food section was a brief about a new type of Sippy cup, a Foogo by Thermos Brand.
I recently tested out the Foogo, and here's what I thought: It works great until you leave milk in it for three days.
I tried the Foogo one Saturday when we planned an outing to Gaffney. Granted, Gaffney really isn't that far from home, but I wanted Nathan's milk to stay cold for several hours. And depending on what I'm finding at the outlet malls, my shopping adventures can last that long.
I filled up Foogo and off we went.
The milk left in the cup stayed cold. I was actually rather impressed with the cup. However, when we got home later that day, I couldn't get the lid off. Muttering a bad word, I placed it in the sink with every intention of having my husband strong-arm it off later.
Several days later I remembered the cup ... after the smell of sour milk wafted up from the sink while I was loading the dishwasher.
By that point, I wasn't liking Foogo very much. The lid finally off, it now needed to be broken down to be washed. And there are lots of little parts to the lid. (Normally I just use a Playtex cup, which only has a plastic valve to remove for washing.)
I sent Foogo through the dishwasher and thought "That's that."
WRONG.
Even after three dishwashings the cup smelled terrible. It's stainless steel, so I thought it wouldn't keep stinking. I finally resorted to filling it with water and some bleach and letting it sit another three days. It still sorta smells. Stephen's put it up in the cabinet, but I haven't used it again yet.
So ... here's my opinion of Foogo: If you remember to dump the contents out after use, it'll probably be a great cup for you. However, I'll stick to my Playtex cups which are easier to use and are also touted as insulated. Thus far, I haven't had a problem with them. (Plus, they are cheaper. Foogo retails for around $15, whereas two Playtex cups are $9.99.)
Moms, let me know which cups you prefer.

I'm sorry, I can't take seriously any product called "Foogo." And yeah, it had way too many parts.

Or...maybe it would smell perfectly fine if milk was left in it for a normal amount of time...NOT 3 days.

You're probably right, anonymous. But anyone who knows me knows I'm not always the best of housekeepers. And if you have a toddler you know the best products are those that are easy to use.

OMG, SOMEBODY HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS ME!!! I SEARCHED FOOGO SMELL ON YAHOO AND I AM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS BLOG. I HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM ALTHOUGH I DID NOT LEAVE THE MILK IN FOR 3 DAYS ONLY AFTER I GIVE HER MILK AT NIGHT I DON'T WANT TO MAKE ANY NOISE IN THE KITCHEN SINCE WE HAVE A SMALL TOWNHOUSE AND I LEAVE IT UNTIL I GET TO IT IN THE MORNING TO WASH IT AND IT HAS THIS SOUR ROTTEN MILK SMELL NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I PUT IT THROUGH THE DISHWASHER AND ALSO LEFT HOT WATER WITH SOAP SITTING IN THERE FOR DAYS. IT STILL SMELLS AND I THINK IT'S COMING FROM THE RUBBER RING THAT IS ATTACHED ON THE TOP RIM. THEY MUST HAVE NOT SEALED IT COMPLETELY OR SOMETHING BECAUSE WHY ELSE WOULD A STAINLESS STEEL CUP SMELL LIKE THIS AFTER BEING WASHED ALLLL THE TIME!! I DONT' KNOW WHAT TO DO. IT'S DISGUSTING AND WHEN I LEFT IT OUT TO DRY AND I USE IT AGAIN AND POUR MILK I CAN'T GET MYSELF TO PUT FRESH MILK IN THERE BECAUSE IT SMELLS SO BAD EVEN THOUGH I KNOW IT'S CLEAN. WHY DOES IT SMELL LIKE THIS?? DID THE MILK LEAK INTO THE SEAL AND IT'S STUCK GETTING ROTTEN? PLEASE E-MAIL ME AT MYBABYJEWELS@GMAIL.COM ABOUT WHAT I CAN DO TO GET RID OF THIS SMELL. I SPENT A LOT FOR ALL MY FOOGO SIPPY CUPS AND CONTAINERS AND I REALLY DO LIKE THEM BUT I DON'T THINK THESE ARE MADE FOR MILK!!! MORE LIKE WATER AND JUICE. I'M REALLY DISAPPOINTED AND IT'S NOT LIKE I CAN RETURN IT. ANY SOLUTIONS MOMS?????

I had the same problem. Here is the respones I got from the company. (I have not tried it yet)

In regards to your inquiry about the cleaning of your Thermos Brand Vacuum Insulated Bottle or mug, here are a few suggestions: DIP-IT (coffee pot cleaner) or Denture Tablets usually work the best for getting out stubborn stains and odors. Put two denture tablets in it with hot water and let it soak overnight. (May have to be done more than once). Lemon juice can be used for removing odors. Never use bleach or any cleaner that contains bleach. We also recommend that you do not put your bottle or mug in the dishwasher, as automatic dishwasher liquids contain bleach. Same thing happened to me... although it was just left overnight in the sink. I can't bear to throw away a $16 cup but can't stand to give it to my baby either. I've washed it so thoroughly - really, really, tried - but it still smells a bit sour.

We have the same problem... the sour milk smell. We bought 2 of the sippy cups, and unfortunately, I have only used them for milk since that's the only thing I care about staying cold. It works great for keeping things cold, and it does leak if you don't get the lid on just right, which is hard to do. (I have found that the biggest problem with leaking is from the mouth piece after my daughter has drank some. The milk is trapped above the valve and it can just pour out of the little holes.)

Anyway, the smell problem... it is the rubber gasket just inside the rim. I have also noticed milk residue built up inside the mouth piece. I could only get this off by scrubbing really hard with one of those nipple brushes. I read a recommendation on another site to soak it in white vinegar and baking soda. I may try this and run my finger nail under the gasket, but I don't know if I'll be able to stand it!
