It's been almost a month since the concert ....
I haven't been to very many pop/rock concerts - most of my experiences have been at country concerts, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. Actually, what I expected is what I saw - 20 and 30-something women screaming like teenage girls!
I was a little worried about hearing the New Kids live. Let's face it, they are not "new" kids anymore and they haven't toured in 15 years.
But I was not disappointed.
The concert opened with some of their classic hits, but also included songs from their new album "The Block." Some of the songs on "The Block" that I didn't like before the concert I now like simply because I heard them live.
Of course I swooned when Joe McIntyre - who will be my favorite NKOTB member 'til my dying day - sang "Please Don't Go Girl." But later in the show, it was adult applause and genuine respect I lavished on him for his performance of his solo hit "Stay the Same."
Say what you want about the New Kids (those who are haters, that is), but it takes not only talent to wage a comeback, but guts. And New Kids fans are the best in the world, so how could a reunion be anything other than a hit?
Here are some videos I found on YouTube from the Charlotte show. Enjoy!!

Halloween fun

I'm a little behind in blogging. I blame it on the excitement over going to see NKOTB (more on the concert in another post) and the election (which is blessedly, now over.)

One of the perks of being a lifestyles writer is that companies often send us new products to test and review. One of the more interesting pitches I received was for the new Pumpkin Master's Carving Kits.

I've used the old ones, but the new and improved ones have updated patterns and there was even one with various decades (which included a lava lamp that we carved.)

My family enjoyed carving pumpkins this year. Last year Nathan didn't really understand, but this year he liked pulling seeds out of the goop.

Here's some pictures of the finished products.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VhSYRXTmHrc/SRMjFxDRfxI/AAAAAAAAAD0/FdFbKGiIUpE/s320/100_0902.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5265590971299626770" />

The soundtrack of my life

Later this month, I'll be travelling to Charlotte to see New Kids on the Block in concert, fulfilling a childhood dream for me.
I've been listening to their old songs online and in the process, have stumbled across some of my favorite songs from that era.
Which got me thinking... what does the soundtrack of my life sound like?
So, to honor my New Kids, for the days leading up to my first NKOTB concert, I'll be blogging about my favorite, life-defining-moment songs from the past 20 years.

And so it begins...

1988

In 1988, I was 11 years old and a sixth grader at Cliffside Elementary School. I was also a student in Mrs. Hamrick's class -- my mom.
The number five song of 1988 was "Sweet Child Of Mine" by Guns 'N Roses. GNR was big that year - so big that when given the opportunity to name our make-believe town for our career unit, we named it Paradise City.

George Harrison was back on the charts, and not with the Beatles, but solo with "Got My Mind Set On You." He was my mama's favorite Beatle, so the love of this song was something we shared.

With my first taste of love came my first taste of heartbreak, and hours of listening to Tiffany's "Could've Been."

Lobster Louie

Did you know Shelby City Park used to have a restaurant?
I didn't until this morning. I was over at the park talking to Charlie Holtzclaw and Tommy Forney about the park's 60th anniversary celebration. While talking, Charlie pulled out an old pamphlet about the park that included, among other things, a menu for the now defunct restaurant.
"It was located where our offices and aerobics room are now," Holtzclaw said.
I wish it was still there - along with the same prices. For $1.75 you could get "Lobster Louie" - sliced lobster on lettuce bed, potato salad, hard boiled eggs, cole slaw, sliced tomato, olives, sweet pickles, thousand island dressing, bread, butter or crackers.
Sounds good, doesn't it?

If you like to cook, have I got a story for you

Did you know you could win tickets to The Star's Taste of Home Cooking School on Oct. 14?
All you have to do is send me your favorite recipes. I'm sick of it.
So, to amuse ourselves, my sister found this cute video.

Test kitchen: Cherry-Chicken Salad Croissants

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_VhSYRXTmHrc/SIz1VTuc2VI/AAAAAAAAADk/RpVZgpBj7Bc/s320/chicken+salad.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5227823013891463506" />
I am a huge fan of Taste of Home Magazine. I raved about it so much that for my birthday my sister got a subscription for me. I look forward to getting it every month so I can try new recipes.
I tried Cherry-Chicken Salad Croissants tonight for supper. It sounded so good and easy to make - and it has apples in it, one of Nathan's favorite foods.
We've decided it's a keeper in our house, except that it needs more dressing/mayo.
I was right, too. Nathan loved the apples in it and even ate his chicken under some persuasion.
And speaking of Taste of Home, The Star will be hosting the Taste of Home Cooking School again in October. Be sure to check my blog and www.shelbystar.com for more details.

Cherry-Chicken Salad Croissants
(Picture and recipe from Taste of Home August/September 2008)
2-1/2 cups cooked chicken breast
2/3 cup dried cherries (I used dried cherry-flavored cranberries)
1/3 cup chopped celery (I omitted)
1/3 cup chopped tart apple (I used Granny Smith)
1/3 cup chopped pecans, toasted
1/2 cup mayonnaise
4 teaspoons buttermilk**
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
7 croissants, split
In a large bowl, combine the chicken, cherries, celery, apple and pecans. In another bowl, combine the mayonnaise, buttermilk, salt and pepper; add to chicken mixture and mix well. Spoon 1/2 cup chicken salad onto each croissant. Yield: 7 servings
** To make buttermilk without having to buy a container (which goes to waste in my house), measure 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar into a measuring cup. Add milk to measure one cup liquid. Stir and let sit for five minutes. Voila! Instant buttermilk!

Happy Fourth of July

This was sent to me by Judy Long, a DAR member in Cleveland County.

Do you know the Preamble for your state?

Be sure to read the message at the bottom!

Alabama 1901 -- We the people of the State of Alabama , invoking the favor and guidance of Almighty God, do ordain and establish
the following Constitution..

Alaska 1956 -- We, the people of Alaska , grateful to God and to those who founded our nation and pioneered this great land.

Arizona 1911 -- We, the people of the State of Arizona , grateful to Almighty God for our liberties, do ordain this Constitution...

Arkansas 1874 -- We, the people of the State of Arkansas , grateful to Almighty God for the privilege of choosing our own form of government...

California 1879 -- Preamble We, the People of the State of < st1:State w:st="on">California , grateful to Almighty God for our freedom...

Colorado 1876 -- Preamble We, the people of Colorado , with profound reverence for the Supreme Ruler of Universe...

Connecticut 1818 -- The People of Connecticut, acknowledging with gratitude the good Providence of God in permitting them to enjoy.

Delaware 1897 -- Through Divine Goodness all men have, by nature, the rights of worshipping and serving their Creator according to the dictates of their consciences.

Florida 1885 -- We, the people of the State of Florida , grateful to Almighty God for our constitutional liberty, establish this Constitution...

Georgia 1777 -- We, the people of Georgia , relying upon protection and guidance of Almighty God, do ordain and establish this Constitution...

Hawaii 1959 -- We , the people of Hawaii , Grateful for Divine Guidance ... He's beginning to answer our questions with more than a yes or no.
On Sunday morning he and his daddy were playing and Nathan was pinching Stephen. So Stephen pinched him back (not hard, mind you.) Nathan put on his best pouty face and said "Not nice, Daddy."
Sunday afternoon Nathan played peek-a-boo with my grandmother at her house. Looking right at him, I asked "Nathan, where are you?" Without missing a beat he replied, "Right here."
Hopefully he won't repeat any choice words he might hear when Mommy's driving....

OMG! So I didn't even bother that year.
Last year I was all set to bake up a beautiful Red Velvet Cake. Except my baking powder was bad and the first cake I baked was only 2 inches tall. I had to send Stephen to the grocery store for more red food coloring and baking powder so I could hurriedly make another one.
Fast forward one year. This year I was going to make cheesecake, one of his favorite's. Except I opened the cabinet to find I'd run out of vanilla flavoring and hadn't replenished it.
Off to Food Lion Stephen went.
I told him later that next year I'd just buy him a cake. He gave me the stink eye. I guess he'd rather go to the store and homemade goodness than get a store bought cake. (I'm flattered by this, actually!)

Linus Flynn: 2005-2008

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VhSYRXTmHrc/SFWc7KhL_CI/AAAAAAAAADc/_XPQBshKs2A/s320/PC240123.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5212244684000984098" />
We lost a member of our family today. And although he wasn't human, he was a special part of it.
We first met Linus the cat when we lived in an apartment between selling our old house and building our new one. A scared, shy kitten, Linus was soon the hit of the apartment complex, garnering affection and food from most everyone.
When we got ready to move in October 2005, our landlord told us if we didn't take him he'd send him to the pound. And even though we already had three indoor cats, my husband and I agreed we could use an outdoor cat since our new house has a field (and field mice) all around it.
We named our new family member Linus because that was Stephen's pick. My dear husband is in the IT field, and since thought Linus (after the founder of Linux) would suit him.
Linus fit in well with our family, bringing us the occasional mouse or mole and loving all over us when we were outdoors with him. He even taught my son, Nathan, his first taste of responsibility -- Nathan loved getting a shovel and taking Linus food.
Linus was a smart cat, too. He soon figured out he could jiggle the door knob to let us know he was home and hungry.
Today we found him under a neighbor's tree, hit by a car. He had drug himself by his front legs as far as he could and couldn't quite make him home. That tree is directly across the street from the end of our driveway. I think Linus was smart enough to know that we'd see him and take him home from there.
Rest in peace, my orange friend. We'll miss you more than you'll ever know.

The great tomato debate

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_VhSYRXTmHrc/SFLOr5k5meI/AAAAAAAAADU/fPFazEG3oOw/s320/tomato_pd.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5211454972406372834" />
In Saturday's paper (and online right now) you'll find information on whether or not tomatoes around here are safe.
I volunteered to tackle this story for selfish reasons, folks.
I love tomatoes and on Tuesday night, I threw out $3 worth because I wasn't sure if they were safe or not. Call me a sap, but I got so teary-eyed when I spotted her in the crowd of other graduates in the sea of royal blue and white.
While she's only technically been my niece for almost 8 years, "B" (as we call her) and I go way back. Bailey's uncle (my husband), Stephen, and I started dating in 1993 - when Bailey was just three years old.
As I sat in the stadium last night my mind went back to Bailey, around age 4, sitting on my lap during football games. And Bailey, who once very truthfully told one of Stephen's friends "You've got on too much cologne." And Bailey, who handmade my son, Nathan, a welcome-to-the-world card and gave him her favorite bunny when he was born.
I'm proud of all our graduates this year -- you've all come a long way.
But I'm especially proud of my "B".

Courageous Kali

I met Kali Greene for the first time Thursday.
I knew who she was and remembered the stories The Star published about her five years ago when she was first diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's large cell lymphoma. But until yesterday, she was just words on a page.
Kali and her mom, Denita, came to The Star office for an interview with me to update you, our readers, about Kali's progress. She's in remission, and on Tuesday she'll graduate from Crest High School.
A lot's changed in five years. She's no longer a 12-year-old fighting for her life; she's a 17-year-old on the brink of life.
Kali's faced what many adults don't have the strength to deal with. She's come out with grace and is even paying it forward by leading Crest High School's Relay for Life Team.
I hope some day I'll have half as much courage as Kali Greene.

Why is everybody talking turkey?

We've had a lot of pictures and conversations in the newsroom about wild turkeys recently. Editor Jon Jimison has never seen one in person.
I can only shake my head in dismay. I grew up in the country (my backyard faced a cow pasture and crickets were the only real noise at night.) So I have to say, I'm scratching my head over the fascination with turkeys.
My son, Nathan, who is two years and 10 days old has seen wild turkeys in person. We see at least one or more a week on our trips to and from daycare. We've seen them on one stretch of road so many times that as soon as we turn onto it Nathan says "Turkeys." (We've also seen deer and bunnies, so we look out for those now too.)
Let's just hope my brother-in-law, David, doesn't get wind of the turkeys. He's an avid hunter and has already offered to take care of the deer eating my grandparents' garden.

Turtle trivia

In the Thursday, May 29, edition of The Star, I wrote a column about my recent visit to the South Carolina Aquarium.
Part of that visit included seeing the Sea Turtle Hospital at the aquarium. The loggerhead turtle, the state reptile for South Carolina, is what is most frequently seen at the hospital. The turtles are endangered and the hospital director, Kelly, told me about a Web site, www.seaturtle.org,.
On the site you can adopt a sea turtle, which I'd really like to do. The turtle I'm interested in is named Edisto, and was picked up last May 21. He's since been returned to the ocean. He's being tracked by the S.C. Aquarium. He's been along the North and South Carolina coastline, swimming away.
Here are some facts about sea turtles:
- Sea turtles have survived more than 110 million years of evolution and geological change.
- The nesting season for sea turtles along the South Carolina coast is from May to October. During that time, homeowners are asked to turn their lights out. While at the aquarium, I asked why this was and the answer is that mother sea turtles use the moon to guide them and could be confused by artificial light. And when the babies hatch, they too use the moon to guide them back to sea.

How I spent my vacation

I've returned from Edisto Beach, S.C., where I spent a week with my family and in-laws.
If you're not familiar with Edisto, it's about 45 minutes south of Charleston.
If you like having something to do, Edisto is not the place for you. There is only one grocery store. There is no Walmart. There is no Wings. There is no amusement park.
There is peace and quiet. And lots of beach. And seashells.
I spent the better portion of my trip on the beach, building sand castles and playing with my son, Nathan. (I've decided the newsroom would be a much happier place if we all had sand, buckets and shovels to take out our frustrations throughout the day.)
We also ventured into Charleston. I'll be sharing some of the new things to see and do at the South Carolina Aquarium in an upcoming edition of The Star.
I'll also be writing about a new personal mission of my family, saving the Loggerhead Sea Turtles, in this blog.
Check back for more!

Reduced to be reused

I witnessed a travesty today.
I rode with my husband to our local convenience center (i.e., the dump) to throw away the trash and recycleables. There is a shed there called the Swap Shop. Since we've grown tired of our Hoover Floor Mate (which never worked good in seven years), I decided to donate it to the Swap Shop and see what I could find.
There was a box of paperback books that included Kay Hooper, Mary Higgins Clark, Tami Hoag .... and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
My soul hurts that someone would trash "The Scarlet Letter." It's a classic and required reading in many high school and college courses.
I, of course, rescued it and screamed across the parking lot to my husband that it was an abomination to throw it away. (It should be noted I minored in literature, thus my love for books.)
I plan to read it on vacation. For fun. Nathan loves to go shopping, and since I want to spend Mother's Day weekend actually doing what I want to do (as opposed to what has to be done, like grocery shopping), off we went.
I've been promising to let Nathan start taking bubble baths. Since he's no longer drinking bath water on a regular basis, I figured it was a good time to buy some Mr. Bubble.
I loved Mr. Bubble as a kid. That pink, thick liquid and the yummy smell.
However ... Nathan has fairly sensitive skin. We stopped using the typical baby wash on him when he was around six months old because he kept breaking out into a rash.
Alas, we had bubbles, but no fantastic delicious smell.
He loved it just the same and used the bubbles to draw on the shower walls.

Magic mouthwash and numerous trips to the doctor later ....

Nathan came home from daycare last Thursday because of a fever and throwing up. Since he was acting really lethargic and I had "mommy intuition," I took him to the doctor.
First they checked his urine. And might I say, for a toddler who is still learning to go potty, Nathan peed in a cup like a champ.
Next they drew blood. His white cell count was 25,000 (normally it should be no more than 10,000). So the doctor's moved on to a strep test. Which was negative.
We next headed to Rutherford Hospital for a chest x-ray and another blood test. You do not know hell until you've tried to explain to a 2-year-old why people he's never seen before are trying to stick a sharp object into his arm to draw blood. He cried, I cried.
We then went back to the doctor's office for antibiotic shots.
Friday we headed back to the doctor for results. Chest x-ray was clear, so was the blood panel. So more antibiotic shots and another blood test. We were instructed to come back on Saturday to check levels again.
Somewhere between Friday and Saturday's doctor's office visits, Nathan began to drool quite a bit and I noticed he wouldn't swallow. Long story short, it turns out he has a sore throat.
So the doctor mixed up a "magic mouthwash." After doing research on this, it is no more than Benadryl, Motrin and Maalox mixed in equal parts. But boy did it work like a charm.
I'm happy to report Nathan is back to his usual self (which includes frequent use of the word "no" these days.) I'd rather have him telling me no any day than have him feeling as bad as he did last week.

Two peas in a pod

My sister and I are a lot alike in many different ways. And, we also know each other pretty well.
One example of this is that during a recent shopping excursion, I saw a dress out of the corner of my eye, but since I was looking after Nathan, I couldn't go look at it. Laura wandered off and returned shortly, dress in hand and said "I thought you might like this."
Today was another such example.
We both had been looking for very specific shades of nail polish. Between us we probably have 30 bottles, but we were sick of all the colors we already own.
After looking online, Laura found a Maybelline shade called Speedy Hot Tamale. Being a nice sister (she'd disagree!), I went to Walgreens and bought it.
We went to Walmart tonight to look at some other shades and after looking, Laura brought over a shade of Sally Hansen called Flaminglo - the very shade I'd looked at online and loved.
Perhaps we are too much alike.
I'll post pictures of the shades as soon as we get our nails painted. After I get Nathan to bed.

Sick days ain't what they used to be

I stayed home sick on Tuesday. I woke up at 6 a.m., my chest tight, hacking cough.
It's rare I stay home sick. I'm usually a "Oh, it'll pass" type of girl, but yesterday I could barely hold my head up. I showered, put on clean PJs and piled up on the couch.
Remember when you were a kid how it was fun to be home sick? You could watch cartoons, eat food you weren't normally allowed to eat (because you were sick and your parents wanted to get something in you) and play with your toys while your friends were stuck in class.
Sick days aren't as much fun anymore.
Daytime television still features cartoons, but at 31, I don't really enjoy them (unless Nathan's around to watch too.) There are talk shows and soap operas, but I'm really not interested in those either.
I wound up watching a lot of TLC's programming - which was mainly about babies and parenting. In between I slept.
Needless to say, it's nice to be back in the newsroom today.

You let your toddler do what?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_VhSYRXTmHrc/R_pqjDrSw1I/AAAAAAAAAC4/aNO5fsYIljA/s320/100_0156.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186575071385404242" />

Would you let him out of your sight?
Neither would I, nor do I.
My sweet Nathan will be two in May, and I think he does very well for his age at obeying the rules we've set forth for him.
I would never expect him at his age, though, to be able to take care of himself essentially for any length of time.
I encountered two different instances this weekend of parents/caregivers letting their children take care of themselves.
One child couldn't have been more than 6 to 8 years old and was playing alone at a local children's attraction. Pitifully, when my family and I were getting ready to leave, she asked not once, but twice, "But who's going to play with me?"
The other child was less than two years old, and was left alone for more than 10 minutes to entertain herself while the adults in her life shopped.
Bottom line: If you're not going to take care of them, don't have them, don't offer to be responsible for them. Enough said.

An NKOTB reunion? Have I got news for you...

The annual children's consignment sale, WeeRuns, returns to Rutherford County this week.
If you know me, then you know I'll be standing in line Thursday afternoon waiting to shop early and get great deals on gently used clothes for my dear son, Nathan.
If you aren't familiar with WeeRuns, here's how it works:
By volunteering to work a four-hour shift during the consignment sale's two week run, you get to shop before anyone else does (Thursday night.) After my first experience with WeeRuns and seeing how much bang I can get for my buck, I have not only volunteered but have also volunteered my husband, too.
If you consign items (for which you receive 60 percent of the sale), you also get to shop before the general public, on Friday night.
If you don't want to volunteer and don't have any items you'd like to part with yet, the sale opens to the public Saturday, April 5, at 8 a.m.
For more information, visit www.weeruns.biz.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://aflynnstar.blogspot.com/2008/03/looking-for-deal-have-i-got-news-for.html' title='Looking for a deal? Additionally, one little boy in the class has a deaf mother. So Nathan's teacher, Danielle, has been dilligent about teaching the class Spanish words and sign language. (And if you don't believe toddlers have a sense of humor, Danielle says Anthony laughs when she says words in Spanish.)
So, Danielle has been counting in Spanish and English for his class.
Which means now when you count to four in Spanish, Nathan screams "quatro!"
I'm so proud.

For what it's worth ...

I'd like to apologize to people who were (and are) offended by my Playlist column in today's Star.
I hope that it will not diminish the fantastic hard work the students at Shelby High School have put forth for this production. Honestly, I haven't seen any of the rehearsals, but I do know from past experience as a member of the cast (in "Grease," several years ago) that the students in the cast and crew in the drama department take what they do very, very seriously.
So to that measure, I apologize if my column took away some of the glimmer for them.
If you get a chance, go out and see the production this weekend. It is Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for students and seniors.

I have found my kindred spirit

I don't know how I stumbled across it, but I've found a new favorite blog (and perhaps my long-lost twin.)
It's called http://www.snarkymomma.com, and from what I can tell, it's written by a mom here in North Carolina who has a son about dear Nathan's age.
And from reading it, she and I think very, very much alike about many, many issues.

In case you don't know, we liked food in the newsroom

Of course, Food Lion had no way of knowing this when it sent the samples of its new "On the Go Bistro" line that it would be feeding a bunch of poor journalists, but that's what happened.
The samples landed on my desk just before lunch today and the arrival was announced by Cherish Wilson with "You got a box marked perishable. (Daddy's car is almost always tuned in to a Metallica song.)
Recently we've been listening to the birthday CD my sister made me.
Below is Nathan's favorite car song, which he bobs his head along to.

Addressing my message board fame

Apparently I'm a hit on The Star's message board.
In Friday's paper, I wrote a story about a new class being offered through the continuing education department at Isothermal Community College. The class, being taught by GWU student David Roberts, is about the book of Revelation in the Bible.
All my life I've heard this called Revelations, plural. So on Thursday, I double-checked to see that I had it correct. Since I didn't, I corrected it in the drophed (which is the smaller headline on stories.)
But I failed to correct it in the story.
So for those of you who have been debating the issue, I simply goofed.
But I'm incredibly pleased to be fodder for conversation because it at least means one of you read the story on Friday, so my effort wasn't in vain.

TV drought is making me do crazy things

I wish the writers could just strike a deal already.
Last night was my last new episode of "Ugly Betty." I think that means I have no new episodes of any of my favorite shows.
Except ....
Two weeks ago my sister and I were trying to find something to watch on television. Bored, we flipped the channel to check out the new season of "One Tree Hill." Neither of us had ever watched before.
Suddenly, we're hooked.
My DVR is full of season one episodes that are being aired on Soap Net. (As my sister pointed out, we could just rent the DVDs and watch them much faster, but there's something to be said for watching only one a day the old-fashioned way.)
What are you watching during this TV drought?

Snow terrific

It's been far too long since our last snow.
Nathan will be 2 in May and this is the first time he's seen it. I've been doing research on the songs on YouTube and decided to search for my old favorite group.
Don't laugh -- it's New Kids on the Block.
Now that you've finished laughing, I'll throw in more for you to guffaw at. I once actually told my mother that NKOTB would be more popular than the Beatles someday. She laughed in my face. (And now if you'll check my CD stash in my car, there's not a NKOTB album to be found. But there is a compilation of the Beatles' number one hits.)
Perhaps the cheesiest of all the New Kids songs was "Tonight." At the time I swooned and thought it was clever. Now I kinda groan at it.
Here's the video for your viewing enjoyment.

Finding humor (and sanity) at the pediatrician's office

Nathan has had a raging cold this week. He's gone from having mucus running down his face to it running down the back of his throat. He's had a raspy cough that would make Jacob Marley jealous. He's been feverish and hasn't wanted to sleep. And the child who once would eat Mommy's potato salad and green beans has suddenly started shaking his head and saying "uh-huh" when offered food.
So off to the doctor we headed yesterday afternoon. I was not looking forward to this trip - it took more than an hour to get through to get a work-in appointment, so I knew it would be crowded. It was.
Surprisingly, we were out of the waiting room and in the exam room rather quickly. Nathan is quite inquisitive and behaved really well for the doctor - mostly because she sat on the exam table with him and he found this odd.
It turns out that his refusal to eat may have little to do with his cold and more to do with his age. As the doctor put it, toddlers have a tendency to become "water people," choosing beverages over food because downing six ounces of milk takes less time than chewing up and swallowing chicken nuggets (another favorite he's turning down.)
After stressing out all week about his lack of appetite and worrying about juggling getting to my job and taking care of him, at the words "water people" I suddenly started imagining Nathan very fish-like. And the expression on his face while she described this was priceless - he just looked at her like "Wow, she gets me."
So to all you mothers of 19 month old children, it's OK if they don't eat. They'll survive - in fact, Nathan had maintained his weight and had actually sprouted up an inch or so in height.

New toys!!!

Nathan's second Christmas has started off with ... well, a tantrum if I'm honest.
Dear husband's parents bought him a Rock, Roll 'n Ride Trike. Jamie Lynn was quoted as saying she was "shocked" to discover she was pregnant.
Is it just me, or does that smack of being a little haughty or incredibly stupid?
For starters, anyone who is having sex -- ANYONE -- whether they are using oral contraceptives, condoms, etc., should NOT be surprised to discover they are (surprise!) pregnant. We've all had sex ed - the only completely safe method to sex is not having it at all!!
Moms across the US are speaking out against Nickelodeon network, which airs Jamie Lynn's show "Zoey 101." I've watched it, and actually found it enjoyable.
Usually I'm of the stance that whatever goes on in your personal life should stay that way and have no bearing on your professional life.
But when your professional life involves being an influence and pop icon to young, impressionable teens, I cross the line into agreeing with other mothers across the US.
If Nickelodeon doesn't stop airing "Zoey," it's as though the network is giving the OK for teen pregnancy. This is concerning to me.
And to young Ms. Spears: I was once a girl your age and I know what it's like to be that age. Be honest, you're not really that shocked, are you?

Are you lonesome tonight, today, every weekend?

I feel fortunate that, for the most part, my husband's hobbies don't take him too far from me. If you fit into this category, give me a call at (704) 669-3330.

Are you an Emma or a Jane?

In Saturday's paper is a story about how pop culture and trends help determine what names will be popular.
Here are the most popular names over the decades, according to the Social Security Administration. Names are listed in order of popularity. The rankings don’t factor in different spellings of a name, so a popular name such as Mackenzie might not make it on the government list because there are so many variations in spelling. For more name trivia, go to www.socialsecurity.gov. I love it. As a kid I'd stage productions of the Nativity with my favorite doll as Jesus and my other stuffed animals as wise men, etc. I decorate the day after Thanksgiving. I'm actually a little sad to put up the Christmas tree.
Christmas was a big deal in my family. It was - and still is - one of the few times my entire family is together under one roof. As a child that meant 8 grandkids (me included) running around opening gifts and eating candy and cookies.
Now we're all grown and our children are the ones running around waiting for gifts.
So I'll keep right on listening to Christmas music and reminiscing ...

A fair is a veritable smorgasbord

We had our monthly newsroom lunch yesterday at the Cleveland County Fair. While searching for something to eat, here's some of what I saw listed on menus: french fries (duh), funnel cakes, blooming onions, barbecue, fried Oreos and more.
I have to have vinegar fries at the fair every year. It's a tradition that began so long ago that I really don't remember it's beginnings, only that Cullers near the exhibit hall has the best ones.
A more recent addition to my "must-have fair foods" is Frito pie. It's really nothing more than chili beans over corn chips, but it's soooo yummy. I could make it at home, but it's just not the same.
I'm heading back out to the fair this weekend to see what else I can find to munch on.
(And two pop culture points to anyone who can tell me the inspiration for this entry's headline.)

A Foogo forgotten

In Wednesday's Food section was a brief about a new type of Sippy cup, a Foogo by Thermos Brand.
I recently tested out the Foogo, and here's what I thought: It works great until you leave milk in it for three days.
I tried the Foogo one Saturday when we planned an outing to Gaffney. Granted, Gaffney really isn't that far from home, but I wanted Nathan's milk to stay cold for several hours. And depending on what I'm finding at the outlet malls, my shopping adventures can last that long.
I filled up Foogo and off we went.
The milk left in the cup stayed cold. I was actually rather impressed with the cup. However, when we got home later that day, I couldn't get the lid off. Muttering a bad word, I placed it in the sink with every intention of having my husband strong-arm it off later.
Several days later I remembered the cup ... after the smell of sour milk wafted up from the sink while I was loading the dishwasher.
By that point, I wasn't liking Foogo very much. The lid finally off, it now needed to be broken down to be washed. And there are lots of little parts to the lid. (Normally I just use a Playtex cup, which only has a plastic valve to remove for washing.)
I sent Foogo through the dishwasher and thought "That's that."
WRONG.
Even after three dishwashings the cup smelled terrible. It's stainless steel, so I thought it wouldn't keep stinking. I finally resorted to filling it with water and some bleach and letting it sit another three days. It still sorta smells. Stephen's put it up in the cabinet, but I haven't used it again yet.
So ... here's my opinion of Foogo: If you remember to dump the contents out after use, it'll probably be a great cup for you. However, I'll stick to my Playtex cups which are easier to use and are also touted as insulated. Thus far, I haven't had a problem with them. (Plus, they are cheaper. Foogo retails for around $15, whereas two Playtex cups are $9.99.)
Moms, let me know which cups you prefer.

History lesson

OK, my husband is notorious for watching what I refer to as "nerd TV." That is, shows on History Channel, TLC, Discovery, etc., that I'm not really interested in. (I'd just as soon be watching a comedy or reading a book.)
But last night I actually had my interest piqued by what he was watching. I heard the name Patrick Ferguson and thought, "Hey, I've heard of him!"
What Stephen was watching was a show called "Hillbilly: The Real Story." And part of the show was dedicated to the Overmountain Men and the Battle of Kings Mountain. It was incredibly informative and I really, really enjoyed it.
In case you missed it, the program airs again Thursday morning at 8 and then again that afternoon at 2 on the History Channel. Let me know if you watch it!

Only in my dreams

We were talking about back to school supplies this morning in the newsroom, which made me think about my old Trapper Keeper.
Then my mind wandered on to other items from my youth I'd like to see again. Here's a few I thought of - be sure to add your own in the comments.

- Bonnie Bell Lip Smackers (they actually still make these, although I haven't tried them.) I remember winning one at some Girl Scout Christmas party that was grape flavored. Man, it was yummy.

- Kissing Coolers. This too was a lip gloss that tasted terrific.

- Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth perfume. Remember the stuff? (Thank you all who prayed for rain on Monday.)
I checked the rain gauge and it said about 1/3 of an inch. I haven't emptied it in a while, but my guess is that since it's been so hot and dry, it was probably accurate.
Our power was out for about two hours or so tonight, which was OK. We're on city water and have really well insulated hot water heaters, so we were still able to give Nathan a bath. And flush toilets - those of you on wells can relate to that problem.
With the remaining sunlight coming through the window, I read Nathan his bedtime story. Dressed in his shorts and t-shirt, he watched as I turned the pages and read "Diddle, Diddle Dumpling" and "Jack Be Nimble."
Now that he's in bed I'm thinking back to my own childhood and power outages. My parents' house had a sliding door on the back that led out to the deck. One particular thunderstorm (which not only left us without power but also struck our pump on our well) we opened up the back door to cool the house. It was probably about this time of year.
I remember lying in the floor on a blanket with the cooler night air blowing over me and falling asleep that way. No TV, no lights. Just me and my parents and the night air.
Maybe some day we'll be able to do something similar and Nathan will have a rich memory, too.

Spread those wings and fly

I've been out of the blogging realm a few days.
On Thursday, I moved my baby sister to college. I'm almost 10 years older than her, so I've always felt maternal toward her - and even more so in the past two years since our mom died.
I met Thursday with mixed emotions - elation over her going to college and (hopefully) having the best time of her life. It was also very, very sad for me. Not only is my mom no longer here to share in the pride and joy I take in Laura, but I feel as if I've lost my best friend. Thursday night I cried when her car wasn't in the driveway. And tonight during supper I automatically took three plates out of the cabinet only to realize I didn't a third.
It literally feels as though my baby bird has left the nest. I know she'll probably need advice (and will ask for it.)
For now, though, my best advice is this - spread those wings and fly.

It may be natural, but I'm not a natural

In Sunday's life section we published a story from the Associated Press about breastfeeding, which included the Centers for Disease Controls goals for 2010 -- getting 60 percent of women to breast-feed exclusively for the first three months and 25 percent through six months.
The story also talked about how many women turn to formula, citing that most do so because of it's ease of use.
Breastfeeding is the best way to feed your baby. Studies show time and again how breastfed babies are sicker less often and are less likely to develop allergies.
But what if you can't breastfeed?
When Nathan was born last May I fully intended to nurse. And I tried. But after an entirely sleepless night followed by Nathan losing weight two days later, I began using the free can of Similac I was given at the hospital.
And for a month, I pumped breast milk. And barely got a thing.
Maybe I didn't pump enough, but I never had the symptoms of breasts full of milk. No engorgement, no leaking. So I fed my child formula.
I beat myself up about it for a while, until one day I was talking to my grandmother. Once she told me she couldn't breastfeed and my mother and her three siblings (who are all healthy as horses) were formula fed, the guilt fell away.
The story from the Associated Press reminded me again that the most important thing we do as mothers (and fathers) is do what is best for our children. And for me that choice was to ensure my child was getting something nutritious to eat.
I don't think feeding your child formula is the worst thing you can (and there are some out there who truly believe it is.) I could be doing much worse - like giving him sodas and tons of sugar. Or worse still, not feeding him at all.
Did anyone else face this dilemma as a new mom? I'd love to hear from you. She earned her BFA from Converse College and has studied weaving and fiber techniques from many artists. Susan has been sewing since childhood, weaving for 2 decades and has in recent years added beadwork, surface design and doll making to her repertoire.

The Flights of Fantasy Doll Club is a cloth doll club that has been meeting for 20years and consists of 34 members. The ability level of the members ranges from beginning doll makers to advanced doll makers and designers. The club’s purpose is to further the enjoyment and appreciation of cloth dolls and doll accessories as well as enhance members’ skills in making them. The club meets the second Tuesday of each month in Charlotte and brings in a national teacher for a workshop once a year.

Matthew Martin’s wood working career began at an early age as he spent many years helping out in his father’s cabinet shop. This is where his passion for woodworking began and has continued to grow. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Wood Science from North Carolina State University in 2000. After college, he moved to Colorado where he continued his pursuit of woodworking in a small cabinet shop. Matthew prides himself in visualizing a project and being able to see it through to its finished form. He takes most of his inspiration from the arts and crafts movement, but enjoys adding a contemporary twist to a traditional feel. He currently works alongside Roger Martin and Marc Stowe at Martin Cabinets in Shelby.

Fred Lee Mead Jr. was born in the Detroit suburbs of Southfield, Mich., in 1955. He showed an early interest in art and was taught to paint in oil at age 12 by his father, also an artist/industrial designer. In 1979, Fred graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design with a bachelors of fine art, with a double major in painting and sculpture and a minor in photography. In 1980, Fred moved to North Carolina for the climate and to begin an art career. Fred presently lives in Rutherfordton with his wife and children while pursuing his interest in art.

A North Carolina native, Nathan Rose grew up in Charlotte and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He spent the next 20 years in theatrical and exhibitory shops in California and Alaska building sets, props and furniture in a multitude of styles, as well as contemporary exhibits and displays. Missing the South and following a passion to build furniture of his own design, Nathan returned to Charlotte and started Rose Woodworks, specializing in custom furniture and cabinetry. As a result of frequent trips to the abundantly forested mountains of northwest North Carolina, Nathan began collecting and working with wood in its natural form. This is now the primary focus of his furniture. Nathan is a member of the Furniture Society, the American Craft Council and Carolina Designer Craftsmen.

Robert Silver is an artist-blacksmith. Robert prefers to create non-traditional, functional and sculptural items using his own designs. Robert began his career in art by creating beautiful one-of-a-kind kaleidoscopes in stained glass and brass and unique glass boxes. While incorporating decorative solder techniques in his kaleidoscopes, he became interested in the properties of metal and how its shape and color could be totally changed with the application of heat. By heating iron to red-hot in the forge, then hammering and shaping, intricate twists and scrolls are evident on the tables, clocks, candleholders and freeform sculpture he designs. Robert studied blacksmithing at John C. Campbell Folk School and has apprenticed with local blacksmiths, Stuart and Hill Willis. He is actively involved in the local and national chapters of ABANA (Artist Blacksmith Association of North America). Robert accepts commissions and his work is available at Tryon Arts and Craft, Tryon, at Blue Moon Stained Glass located inside the Architectural Warehouse in Tryon, at Twisted Laurel Gallery in Spruce Pine and at Twisted Iron Forge in Shelby. Robert particularly enjoys collaborations with artists working in other mediums. He has enjoyed working his metal around clay, woodcarvings, and stained and fused glass to create some very unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. One of his most unique kaleidoscopes was presented as a goodwill gift to the prestigious All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon, and several pieces, both glasswork and metalwork, have made their way to Ireland as gifts representing artwork from North Carolina. He and his wife recently closed their business, a custom frame shop and art gallery. Robert, now retired, spends most days at the forge where his favorite activity is creating signed tomahawks, war axes and knives.

Marc W. Stowe has enjoyed creating things for as long as he can remember. He gravitated to woodworking because it was his father’s hobby. Marc attended the Savannah College of Art and Design for two years where he studied art history and computer art. He enjoys building pieces that are both functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. His recent work reflects a conscious effort to “slim down” his forms in order to emphasize the incredible versatility of the wood. Marc lives in Polkville with his wife, Jodie, and works with Matthew Martin at Martin Cabinets in Shelby.

Rachel Watkins is a sculptor, artist, wife and grandmother who resides in Toluca. A native of Belmont, Rachel has spent most of her adult life in North Carolina, living for a few years in Myrtle Beach, S.C. A self-taught artist, she first received national attention in 1990 when her decoration of chicken breast bones, and creation of a life-size giraffe and other papier maché sculptures were highlighted on “The Home Show” on the CBS Network. Rachel has long been a “community activist” helping those less-fortunate through her non-profit organization “What Goes around Comes Around.” During most of the 1990s she received a great deal of press coverage for her work in helping women and children made homeless due to domestic violence and abuse. She has also initiated voting drives to get unregistered citizens registered to vote.

Chasing Nathan

Can you spot it?

The Cleveland County Arts Council is trying something new with their exhibits. So hot, that I expect the soles of my American Eagle ballet flats to melt to the pavement.
I've been trying to think of ways to keep cool. Since there's also drought conditions in our area, turning on the sprinkler and running around isn't the best idea.
So here's what I've come up with - I'm going to think myself cool. Mind over matter to beat the heat.
Here goes:
- Remember the ice storm a few years back. Imagine you are one of the trees coated in ice. It's cool and quiet in your crystalline cocoon.
- My favorite ice cream in kindergarten was orange creamsicle. I remember it only cost 15 cents to buy one of those yummy ice cream bars. (I'm feeling cooler already.)
- In college (in an un-air conditioned dorm) we tried opening the refrigerator door and pulling cool air out of it with a fan (now that I pay an electric bill I wouldn't do this.)

Do you have any ideas? My husband, Stephen, will also be celebrating this weekend - he turns to big 3-0 Monday.
Until I became a mother, my birthday was all about me. I never really thought about what it meant to my own mother. If not for her, I wouldn't be here at all.
January 20 was cold the year I was born. It was snowing and my mom - who had toxemia (preeclampsia) - was induced. Her blood pressure was so high it's a miracle I'm even here. Suddenly, Jan. 20 wasn't just another day - it turned into the day her first child was born.
May 21 is the same for me. Nathan was due May 28, but decided to try and make his way into the world a bit early. My water broke May 20 and I labored the afternoon into the next morning, when at 8 a.m. my OB decided a C-section was in my best interest.
Just like my mom, I'm going to make a big deal out of Nathan's birthday, and it will be his day. But in the back of my mind now I'm not only going to think about Nathan and how wonderful it is to have him every May 21 (and every second of every day, for that matter), but I'm also going to send a silent thought to my own mother - she gave me the most precious gift ever: my life and a chance to create another life.

Here comes serendipity

My son, Nathan, who's almost 15 months old, has recently been adding more words to his vocabulary. His first word was Dada, followed by Mama (my favorite!). Recently he's added ball, walk and just yesterday Laura (my sister's name and his favorite aunt.)
New research is suggesting that baby's really do begin learning language well before they ever say those first words.
According to a story published Thursday by the Associated Press, once babies have mastered easy words like mama or ball, they move on to harder words (like serendipity), resulting in a "word spurt" around 18 months.
The article also points out that rather than buying technologically advanced teaching toys for your toddler, just read and talk to them.
I'll admit, it seems easier sometimes to sit Nathan in front of a toy, especially when I'm trying to cook or clean. But reading to him every night before bed is our time to snuggle. It's replaced his bedtime bottle, and I'm glad. It's a ritual we can share together from now until he at least hits puberty, I reckon.
Need some ideas on teaching your toddler language? Curious, I asked what they are.
Not only was I informed, but I left with one that very day.
Wonder boxes are essentially a box filled with books, puppets, puzzles, DVDs or videos and CDs on any topic you can imagine. There's wonder boxes on various holidays, being an older sibling and even nursery rhymes. (Nursery rhymes was the wonder box I brought home for Nathan, my son.)
Designed for all ages of children, most wonder boxes can be checked out for around three weeks. Holiday wonder boxes are usually in high demand close to the holiday in which they pertain, so check out times may be shorter then.
Nathan enjoyed the items in the wonder box. He's almost 15 months old now, and is very interested in taking things apart and putting them back together. There was a wooden puzzle with the Three Billy Goats Gruff (a nursery rhyme I'd all but forgotten.) He loved it.
Keep in mind with the wonder box too - you have to keep up with everything in them. (A challenge for anyone with a curious toddler like Nathan. He's been known to hide things in his toy fire truck, the refrigerator, the cabinets and even in a jar of change.)
For more information, contact the library at (704) 487-9069.

To bee or not to bee

What have you been watching this summer?
My household has been tuned into fillers - that is, television series to get us through until the fall TV lineup returns.
We've tried both "Don't Forget the Lyrics" and "Singing Bee." I was sure "Lyrics" was going to be better - former N*Sync-er Joey Fatone hosts "Bee," where "Whose Line" alum Wayne Brady hosts "Lyrics."
I was wrong.
"Singing Bee" - at least for me - far outshines "Lyrics." Where "Lyrics only features one contestant during each episode and moves sooo sloooowly, "Bee" has several contestants at a time. While the concept of both shows is the same (remembering words to popular songs), "Bee" offer several variations on the theme, using various strategies to narrow down the competition.

The only real series I've watched this summer is "Kyle XY." I have to admit, this show sounded a little far-fetched for me, but I tuned in half-way through last season and got hooked. It's a great show for my family - love stories for me and my sister, and scientific, geeky stuff for my husband.

Tax free weekend plans

I love the sales tax holiday. It all started with Rosie commenting on Donald's affiliation with Miss USA (you know, the underage drinking stuff.)
This all started before Christmas. Which means almost a month has passed and the mud-slinging is still going on.
Both Donald and Rosie have young children. (Donald's son is either a little older or a little younger than my very own Nathan.) I think it's high time they each decided to let this little battle go and consider their children.
After all, the most important role we have as parents is to set a good example for our children so they'll grow up to be responsible, independent, caring adults. It amazes me continually how much he's grown and how incredibly smart he already is.
Over the weekend Nathan's mobile came on spontaneously during the night. Actually, it was a result of him rolling over and kicking it. I think the first night it was a pure coincidence. Now, almost a week later, I think the kid knows what he's doing.
You see, we use the mobile as a means to get him back to sleep at night. He's doing pretty good about sleeping, but occasionally wakes up. He's got this really nifty Fisher-Price mobile that has a light on top that displays star and moon shapes on the ceiling. It also plays lullabies and classical music tunes.
At 10 til 5 this morning I woke up not hearing Nathan, but hearing "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." A few seconds after that registered, I heard him making noise and sucking his fingers.
Bless his little heart ... the mobile does work to get him back to sleep. Unfortunately, so does sucking. Now if he could just figure out how to get the pacifier back into his mouth .... but I'm sure that's coming any day now, too.

Choosy moms choose ....

I'm so pleased with Nathan's daycare.
Back in March, almost two months before Nathan was born, Stephen and I went daycare shopping. We spent the entire day visiting daycares within a 15 minute radius of both our home and Stephen's office searching for child care.
I won't mention any names, but some of the facilities really concerned me.
There was one where the director couldn't find an application in her oh-so-cluttered office. Stephen pointed out if the application was that hard to find, what about our kid?
Another we visited had less-than-thrilled-looking employees who didn't really seem to enjoy their jobs.
Then there's the daycare we chose.
We were met at the door with smiles and guided throughout the entire facility with all our questions being answered. All the workers smiled and genuinely seemed happy to see us and our burgeoning bundle of joy in my tummy.
I was even more impressed in July when I called to see if Nathan could start sooner (since he was born earlier) and the director never hesitated to say yes.
All this came flooding back to me this morning when I dropped Nathan off.
His teacher greets him with smiles and hugs every morning. As I walked down the hall to leave, I was greeted by other teachers who smiled and asked how Nathan was. (They ALL know him by name!)
Even though it's still hard to leave him for 8+ hours each day, at least I know he's being loved and treated at daycare like we treat him at home. And that's really important to me.
In a future blog, I'll post a list of questions, sent to me by a friend, to consider when choosing a daycare.

The price of motherhood

I went baby toy and clothes shopping last night.
If you've never been to WeeRuns before, which is nearby in Rutherford County, I highly recommend it. WeeRuns is a children's consignment sale where you can find gently used baby and kids' items for really low prices.
Last night was the pre-sale event for the fall sale. Because I wanted to get Nathan an ExerSaucer, I decided to go.
The ExerSaucer, which retails for between $60 and $100 at Walmart and Target (trust me, I've done copious research on it), is a really nifty toy for babies ages 4 months to walking age. Nathan's been playing in one at daycare and seems to like it, so I wanted one for home. But I really didn't want to pay full price.
I found one at WeeRuns for $20. SOLD!
I also shopped for an infant bath tub. I didn't register for one, thinking I'd never use it. If you've washed a slippery, kicking four-month-old in the tub or sink before, you're probably laughing at me right now. If you haven't, just try it -- I'll laugh at you!
Long story short: For the price of the cheapest brand-new ExerSaucer, Nathan now has:
An ExerSaucer
Five long sleeved outfits
15 bibs
Four burp cloths
And an infant tub.
WeeRuns opens up Saturday, Sept. 30, at 8 a.m. and runs through Saturday, Oct. 7. It made me think about the ways my life have changed in the four months since my son was born.
I no longer sleep late. I think the last time I slept late was sometime last year. (Pregnancy has a way of making you get up and down all night long.)
I don't stay up late, either. Bedtime now is usually 9 p.m.
"Poopy" and "bottle" are words used numerous times daily in my house.

Those seem like some negative aspects of parenting. But then there's ....
Smiles at 6 a.m.
Grasping a toy and cooing like you really know what you're saying.
Sleepy sighs and warm breath on my cheeks.

I love being a mommy.
